The MS Society of India (MSSI) is celebrating the success of one of its long-standing volunteers who lives with MS, Dr Rebecca Verghese, in winning the Mrs India Earth “Beauty with Brains” title.
“Mrs India Earth” aims to create & empower role models who will serve as ambassadors to charity, enriching the perceptions of beauty and sharing strength, energy and spirit for the advancement of women, while working to improve their communities. The contest provides women with a platform to make a positive difference to the world by representing India on various international platforms.
Rebecca, a medical doctor in emergency medicine, was diagnosed with MS at 20 years old. In need of information and emotional support, Rebecca and her family contacted the MSSI and met with Meena Gupta, founder of the society’s chapter in Hyderabad. Since 2005, Rebecca has received dedicated emotional support from MSSI, and has actively contributed to the organisation’s activities by helping to run a variety of events.
This year, Rebecca entered into the “Mrs India – Queen of Substance” pageant and made it through to the finals. Eager to see her succeed, MSSI offered both financial and promotional support to take part. Whilst the organisation sponsored the cost of her travel to the finals, MS cause ambassador and supermodel Milind Soman held a promotional shoot with Rebecca to generate greater publicity. This support helped Rebecca to win the title.
Rebecca said she was “elated” to win the award and expressed her gratitude to MSSI for offering “love and support”, helping her to participate in the contest.
