Services and celebration in India

The MS Society of India recently organised two high-profile medical and fundraising events.

At the end of February the Mumbai Chapter, in association with Shushrusha Hospital in Dadar, organised a medical camp , the aim being to provide free medical services for people with MS and caregivers.

The one-day event was attended by around 170 people including people with MS, doctors, hospital staff, volunteers and MS Society of India staff.

The hospital provided free health checks for patients and carers, speech therapy, and outpatient rooms and staff.

Sheela Chitnis, National Vice President and Mumbai Chairperson, says: “We are thankful to Dr Rekha Bhatkhande for enabling us to successfully conduct the camp free of charge at Shushrusha Hospital and providing all in-house facilities. We are also thankful to pharma companies for donating supplementary medicines and adult diapers.

“We are extremely thankful to all our dedicated doctors who gave their services and to staff at Shushrusha Hospital for their support and making this camp very successful.”

A week later, the Delhi Chapter celebrated their 25th anniversary with a charity evening at the Lalit Hotel in Delhi, attended by more than 400 guests. The evening’s entertainment included singer Penaz Masani, comedian Amit Tandon and a short film on MS. The Delhi Chapter also marked the occasion with the launch of a new handbook on MS.

According to the Atlas of MS 2013, there are 85,000 people living with MS in India, with an average of more than two women for every man.
